Credit Rating and Scores
There are many factors that can affect your credit score and you can now check your own details by contacting the credit reference agencies direct.
Missed, late, reduced or special arrangements on debt repayment will normally have an affect on your credit score as can the amount of debt you have and even financial links you may have with other people.
Two of the largest are Experian and Equifax and you should visit their web sites for details and information about checking your score or to find out more about the data and information they hold.
Lenders normally assess your score against the product you are applying for and this will either meet their criteria or not and in principle the lower your score the more difficult borrowing money can become and the more expensive it usually will be.
Bankruptcy will have the largest negative effect on your credit score.
Arrangements like Debt Management and an IVA will normally have and effect on your score and depending on your circumstances and where you apply you may not be able to get further credit in the short and in some cases medium to long term. This is not likely to improve until the debts have been repaid.
Information can only be kept for up to a maximum of 6 years.
